Scholarship Recipient 2022
We presented a $1,000 scholarship to Calder S. Raio at Northport HS on June 8. Calder is a very deserving recipient. He has done biological research, is a member of Wilderness Club, Boatswain for Sea Scout Ship 270, volunteer for: Seatuck Community Science, Billion Oyster Project, and Northport Native Garden Initiative. He’s National Honor Society, Mathematics Honor Society, and NHS World language Honor Society. He intends to study environmental science and has committed to SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in their honors program as a Chemistry major. I’ve invited him to attend one of our meetings. He's teaching sailing this summer but will see if he can come in late one day so he can meet us all! I will bring a presentation board to the July meeting so you can read more about him. Thanks again to our stellar committee: Karen Breen, Carole Casamassima and Denise DinofrioZizzo.

Megan Kathleen Kropp, 2020 Scholarship Recipient
Scholarship Committee Report - By Karen Fuller
It was a highly unusual process this year to choose our annual scholarship recipient. One thing that was not unusual was the quality of the applications. The committee is proud to announce our winner is Meghan Kropp.
Meghan will be attending Clemson University where she will major in Environmental Engineering. AGC scholarship requirements include an essay that delineates how they have improved the environment in the past and how their “anticipated career choice will help protect the earth’s resources and preserve our environment for generations to come.” Her essay described her lifelong interest in the environment. Her scientific inquisitiveness led her to two research projects; one that investigated using white pine branches as water filters. She completed a second project in conjunction with SBU on nitrogen-removing biofilters to reduce nitrate levels in wastewater.
In addition, Megan is very strong academically and has held leadership roles in the marching band, multiple honor societies, varsity field hockey and track teams, and community volunteer activities, including VP of the Northport 4-H Club. She is an avid swimmer and holds a NYS Boaters License and is SCUBA certified. She has several part-time jobs. She is well-liked by her peers, as she was voted Homecoming Queen this past fall.
We have invited her to attend one of our meetings, whenever they return. I also wish to thank the other committee members who pored over the applications and were able to agree on such a fine candidate. Please applaud Karen Breen, Carole Casamassima, Brenda Leigh Johnson and Nancy Moffett; and a very special thank you to the staff at Northport HS who transitioned quickly to scan and upload the applications as PDFs so we were able to read everything online. The awards ceremony was conducted online as well, as I recorded the AGC part which was integrated into a lovely video presentation. Thank you, also to our members, as it is through your generosity that we are able to provide this annual scholarship opportunity.
