It's the holiday season.. cut some greens and fill a low bowl with different types greens and place some ornaments on top .... If you have antique tart mini pans, maybe glue a ribbon loop on the back and glue a holiday pin or favorite picture in the center and hang it on your tree. Trader Joe's and home Depot have small little trees place them in a long narrow shallow container and add some battery twinkle lights through the greenary, add any woodland or other objects along the greens for a tabletop centerpiece. Look into your garden to see what you have. You'd be surprised what lovely arrangements you can make with different types of greens and put a few Christmas balls, figurines or candles and voila! Let your imagination guide you and just have fun and have a wonderful holiday season see you in 2023!!
Get some inspiration from "Christmas in the Cottage - Come Home to Comfort & Joy" by Cindy Cooper (Hardcover) - a compilation of inspirational decorating with holiday decorations and simple garden touches to brighten your home during the holidays. 220 pages containing 400 beautiful photographs.

We've worked hard on our gardens this spring and let's take a break and bring out the chaise lounge and your libation of choice and relax with some picture books of gardens from the Art Section, 2nd floor in the library above the computer area. Also, if you are able to find from Libby or Overdrive this novel, "Elizabeth's German Garden"....a very interesting horticultural read on a women's quest to build almost an arboretum on her property in late 1700 /1800's in Germany ....one woman with her gardener and the life on a farm with her husband and children.

March winds bring April showers that bring May flowers that bloom in June!
As we are enjoying the fruits of our labor this spring, I came across some magazines in CVS while waiting on the pharmacy line. I noticed they had several different gardening magazines some showed you gardens or with pots as their main source... others showed you a she-shed made from old doors and windows.... I particularly liked the one that took old shovels and hoes and pitchforks and turned that into a trellis.
Sure Barnes & Noble has many magazines that we could enjoy but look around at our local grocery stores and drug stores ...you may be surprised at what you find.... Happy planting!

Well, it’s still a little cold and unpredictable weather will come our way this month…BUT don’t give up hope, Spring is just around the corner! I have noticed in Newsday’s Sunday paper, a section called “Seniors” and found 2 libraries listing Zooms on Horticulture and Flora…Franklin Square Library and Port Washington Library. You may register for the Zoom by calling the libraries directly. If you are not a Newsday subscriber, just search the web for the libraries and check their events calendar.
“New York in Bloom” by Georgianna Lane. (712.6) – This is a beautiful book of photographs discovered in the heart of New York City.
“Grow Containers” by Geoff Stebbings (DK e-book) – wonderful pictures with explanations of the materials used.
“ Unearthing the Secret Garden – The Plants and Places That Inspired Frances Hodgson Burnett” by Marta McDowell (e-book) – this book is for anyone who loves the story and is interested in the story behind the story. My favorite copy of this book is a Special Edition with Tasha Tudor’s Art. There is also a movie made in 2010 with Colin Firth and Julie Walters.
You may enjoy the Netflix movie “A Little Chaos” with Kate Winslet – A willful woman is hired to design a garden at Versailles for Louis XIV. Soon she is enamored in political and romantic complications.

Well, we have one more month to go before we really start our Gardening season. Some of you may be sowing seeds or taking care of your cuttings and looking out the window anxious to get started and wondering what the new season will bring. Maybe what new plants can I put in my garden or pots & planters; what new combinations are out there.
Go to library and check out their magazine section. They have the current issue of the following gardening magazines on display that you can pursue their wonderful articles and beautiful pictures to give you inspiration for your garden and containers. Below the current issue of these magazines are a whole year’s worth of information to pursue while in the library or take home to enjoy at your leisure. And of course, book stores are a good source for garden magazines : Garden Gate; Fine Gardening; Horticulture – The Art & Science of Smart Gardening
And if you can find it…The English Garden
The Last Garden in England is a charming romantic novel by Julia Kelly. Gertrude Jekyll was one of the first landscape designers in England in 1907 and this is the story bringing it back a garden to its former glory including a mystery.
Other books by Gertrude Jekyll: Wall & Water Gardens and Colour Schemes the Flower Garden
The Gardener’s Essential (an eBook), The Lost Gardens of Gertrude Jekyll (could only find on Amazon or Ebay)…the color blocks are amazing and her sense of color in perennial boards is amazing!
